The Plan to End Childhood Hunger in Colorado
“Hunger’s hard,” says Tina Podolak, executive director of Colorado Anti-Hunger Network (CAN). “It’s invisible. People in schools understand childhood hunger, people who see and work in the field of poverty and the agencies who work with food banks get it.” But the average American doesn’t, and that’s what CAN is working to change.
The small organization is developing a statewide plan to end childhood hunger, modeled after Share Our Strength’s national childhood hunger strategy: to surround children with nutritious food where they live, learn, and play.
“I love the family-school-community model,” Podolak says. “You can see where all the existing [assistance] programs fit into categories people understand.”
As a Share Our Strength partner to end childhood hunger, CAN will accelerate its work to educate the public about the prevalence and impact of hunger among America’s children, and its efforts to eliminate the barriers that keep families from getting the nutritious food they and their children need to live healthy, full lives.
